Good ideas and suggestions!
The ideas are great however the site is still in the red as it is. When we run large contests like the one we are running this month the interest appears to be there to participate but not to get involved financially. With over 2000 members there is no way we should be running in the red. So I think to put mini's as prizes is not gonna work until people actually start donating to the site and get us into a position that we can do great things like that. Now having said that if we have members who wish to purchase and donate these items for contests like this then that would make it very cost effective.
For your ideas on posting threads that create discussion I think that is something that we were very good at but in the last few months have gotten rather lazy at doing. So by all means guys lets get the posts rolling with USEFUL threads. A thread made just to be there is not helpful and very likely to be deleted. A thread promoting discussion is a fantastic thing.
Anyways thats just my 2 cents

There are many ways to skin a cat.
On the back end, I'm sure you guys are handling advertisers and such, always continue contacting more and more businesses; money isn't the only commodity you can accept as payment (although it is often the most useful).
I suggested a way above to accept product as payment for advertisement in exchange. That is something you just have to work out with your sponsors. I'm not sure if you guys have a representative or whatever for this sort of thing or not, but it's helpful.
Also, you may want to consider raffles. They're a good way, especially in our hobby, to generate money. You could even host them on a regular basis if the turnout is good.
Put up a product that many people want, charge $x per raffle ticket, and there you go.
Just a few ideas.

Well this didn't exactly have the morale-inspiring effect I thought it would.
Carry on.

What the heck is going on.
Insidious is making some awesome suggestions and helping out tons. I've also dealt with him personally on other other places outside RM, and he has had mod experience before.
Delta, and I could attest - that the site is definetly going red in some zones.
Also remember our kicker - we are a trading and talk forums. That extra difference will go a mile.
Lets look at the bigger picture - not short sighted - we are here to maximize, and expand.
Not some short term effect material.
More discussions = greater SEO = more traffic.
Insidiius - offered the perfect suggestions for that.
No problems anymore, any misunderstandings that existed were resolved in the chat.
Now, back to topic, how to increase member activity?
We tried raffles, we tried customized avatars, we have tournaments and competitions, and still nothing...

Hey what happened to the prior posts before Tesla's did they get removed?

Yes, they got removed :/ (for no valid reason, tesla, not everything should be deleted, stuff needs always to be talked out...).
Now, AGAIN, back to topic. after a chat brainstorming, a concrete thing aroused what should be done to improve member motivation:
A PROPER INTRODUCTORY PAGE, where EVERYTHING is explained what is what, where is what, and everything done in NO MORE THAN ONE A4 page, for clarity reasons. People still don't know where what is on this forum, something like this (in both form of a mandatory intorduction page and introduction e-mail) would be nice.

I know a lot of what stops things getting done at RM is money.
Hey Tesla, we talked one morning about adding a subscription protocol through paypal???....whatever happened with that???

If I could put in my 2 cents here.
As a mod for the 40k radio chat room on ustream and as I have many dealings with the guys there at 40k radio. There are great Idea's We could try from everyone on this thread we can try. but like Tesla said we are in the red in some area's.
As for subscription based community well the pro's you could have are contests for members(but mind you the prizes would have to be better than for non-members: possibly a con).added content/special sections/chat/etc. On the freebootaz forum site they have pretty much the exact same setup as we do here.If you wanna chat you have that opportunity if ya wanna browse you have that too.I don't see a need for this site to be able to see the chatroom from any page you are viewing.Another thing they have is bonus content(old bar episodes, member only contests, etc. So to have a subscription membership we will have to have something that will benifit the member and say hey look at what you get as a member compared to non members. Also in the end be cost effective for both the member and the site.Like i said just wanted to add my 2 cents.
Simple anwser.
Forums.
our members here are on alot of forums. I myself am on over 20. If we all were to just put RM banners in ourt sigs, we would increase traffic dramatically. As for keeping the traffic, we obviously need to have perks.
The more traffic, the more members and the more members the more regular traders. The more traders the more steady traffic.

I will make a comment here, I think what my brothers are trying to say is this..we are a young site and are having growing pains, there is some caution when a "newer" member starts making suggestions for wholesale changes. Since I have been here we have had folks come on like a ball of fire and then 2 months disappear from sight, never to be seen or heard from again. We do need a little more structure but we are working those things out. New ideas are never bad they give us another perspective on how we are doing. Insidius the fellas are working on many things trying to make the site better and sometimes it takes some time. I will tell you I have read most of your posts and yes you have some good ideas but I don't think you have made many posts about our hobby, most have been for want of a better word "critical" of the current state of our site. My suggestion is to take your time and look around our site, read some posts and let it come to you. Every organization should welcome someone critiquing their performance, just remember to do a critique you need to investigate thoroughly your subject. Sorry I got long winded but we want your suggestions and help to grow the site. Just remember some of these folks have worked very hard to get the site where it is now. If it looks like you are criticizing, their feelings can be hurt easily. Just my POV. Thanks brothers

We need to think of a way to get not just American and European users here aswell. It's just when say someone you know from Australia or anywhere else in the world pretty much come here and see no one on chat, no new posts for the last 8 hours and nobody to trade with they will just leave our site. I know this doesn't help in how to solve the problem but it's just another area to focus on.

Im personally in the boat that charging people for any subscription isnt the way to go. Lodge is one thing, people get a discount on actual products and perks here, but actually selling a montly membership... it just doesnt seem fitting for a trading site.
Maybe something like that for WGTV but here, i must disagree.
Im going to try and see if the GW club at my school is still going on I'll advertise us there and maybe at our local GW shop if we're allowed to. Whom would I speak to about this?

Ok...
Perhaps "subscription" is too harsh of a word....how about "automatic recurring donation" instead?? (because thats what I was going for)
My idea was to set something up where people could sign up to give a little bit (say, $1 a month for a year) If you were able to get several people to (cringe) subscribe, a little donation from many people could equal a lot of funding to upgrade the site, fund/expand other RM works (WGTV), and provide more/better prizes for contests and raffles
Not sure if it would work, just an idea...I know if $1 magically disappeared from my account each month, I would be none the wiser
