    Default Primer?

A while ago tesla recomended this "GREAT" primer. It was a brush on primer, that had white, gray, and black variants. The black was suposet to be the best. It came in jars, and was kinda cheap. He said it was sold at art supply stores and I forgot the name. Anyone have any idea what its called?

Oh and what does primer do exactly? (I'm just geting into wargaming)

dunno the name.... I use cheap brand spray (flat white and flat black) as long as its not a humid day, and you spray lightly and w/ correct distance (@6inches) that works fine for me. and at $3 a can I can prime about 30 minis (including nozzle cleanout)

Oh... Primer puts a base coat on the mini (plastic or metal) that allows the paint to stick better. Black can also act as a first coat, creating blacklines in recesses. I usually use black, but if you want something really quick and cool; base in white and hit it with an ink or wash for some cool effects.

Primer is used to help make your paint stick to the model better. I use a spray primer myself as it's faster than painting it on by hand. Duplicolor is the brand i use.

As for brush on primer from art stores he might have been taking about Acrylic Gesso

I do not know what the art supply store primer is called but primer is needed for your paint to stick to plastic or metal if you don't prime with a solvent based primer your paint will rub off.

Ditto with what everyone else just said, also do not mistake black spray paint for primer. They are two diffrent things. Spray paint=Paint, primer= stuff that helps paint stick.
also if you do prime try to do it out doors or in an area that doesn't have alot of dust on a day with low humidity. primer and dust are like two best frineds that talk too loudly to each other, just gets annoying to deal with. humidity can cause ripples in the coat and slow down the drying time.

you're probably talking about an art product called "gesso" a lot of painters have been using this lately, gesso is traditionally used to prime canvas for painters, but you can thin it down pretty good and use it.. but i find it's kind of too much trouble when you can just run out and get some spray primer that's quick & easy!

i HIGHLY recommend Duplicolor Sandable Primer, you can usually find it in any auto-parts store in the spraypaint section. it goes on ultra smooth and is very easy to work with.

    welcome to rogue-market, btw!!

Dont forget also, depending on how you want to paint your minis. Having a white basecoat will make the colors that u use brighter, where a black basecoat will make them darker. Not to mention if you have a wal mart near you, the wal mart brand color place thats about $1.00 works real good, leaves a nice basecoat on your mini. Plus stay away from the brand armoury, it sucks big time.

CITADEL used to sell a paint on primer just called "smelly primer" I found it good for touching up areas where paint chipped off of a metal model. Maybe I should check into this GESSO for that. Anyways you're definitely better off using spray can primer for your basecoat, quicker, easier, cheaper. I have painted plastic models without using primer, and the paint sticks to those fine, of course my plastics I prime to save time. You really don't have a choice with metals though, prime or don't paint is about your only option. Either way

Krylon Flat Matte Black primer also works rather well.
